Calculator Recommendations for CERT Assessments Use this guide to discover acceptable and unacceptable types of calculators for the CERT assessments Cleon Franklin

All CERT assessments are designed to mirror the academic rigor of the actual ACT. We recommend that calculator use be restricted to a 4-function calculator (scientific or graphing) that does not appear on the list of devices prohibited by the ACT. 

Calculators may only be used on the mathematics test. 

*Online 4-function calculators are available for CERT's online Math section.

The following types of calculators contain built-in or downloaded computer algebra system functionality and are prohibited for use during the ACT:

  • All Texas Instruments calculators with model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 and the TI-Nspire CAS
  • All Hewlett-Packard calculators with model numbers that begin with HP 40G, HP 49G, or HP 50G, the HP Prime and the HP 48GII
  • All Casio calculators with model numbers that begin with CFX-9970G, the fx-CP400, the ClassPad 400, the ClassPad 300 or ClassPad 330, and the Algebra fx 2.0
  • All handheld, tablet, laptop computers, or PDAs
  • All electronic writing pads or pen-input devices other than the Sharp EL 9600 
  • Calculators built into cell phones or any other electronic communication devices
  • Calculators with QWERTY format letter keys
